A hot wallet is a type of cryptocurrency wallet where private keys or the infrastructure for signing transactions are stored on an internet-connected phone, computer, browser, or server. Mobile wallets, desktop applications, browser extensions, and many exchange accounts fall into the hot wallet category. An internet connection facilitates daily transfers and the use of decentralized applications; however, that same connection creates a larger attack surface for malware, phishing, and remote access attacks. How Does a Hot Wallet Work?

Users should not accept illegible signature requests as normal; they should utilize tools that offer transaction simulation and permission verification.

The wallet app should be downloaded from an official app store or the developer’s verified website. The recovery phrase should not be stored in a digital note, screenshot, email, or cloud storage. A device lock, up-to-date operating system, reliable antivirus software, and a separate browser profile provide protection. For large transfers, it is important to verify the entire address—not just the first and last characters—if possible, and to make a small test transfer.

Only necessary networks and tokens should be displayed in the wallet; unknown airdrop links should not be opened. Unused DApp links and token approvals can be removed regularly.
