How Should a Coin Be Evaluated?

The distinction between a coin and a token is used to understand the asset’s technical position rather than its price. A native coin is defined at the protocol’s base layer, while a token leverages another network’s execution and security infrastructure. However, designs such as bridged coins, liquid staking tokens, and Layer-2 native assets can complicate this simple classification. For any asset, official network documentation, block explorers, and smart contract information should be reviewed; one should not rely solely on the name or symbol displayed on an exchange screen.

During evaluation, official protocol documentation, open-source code repositories, reliable block explorers, and independent security audits can be used together. The publication date of the sources and the network version they describe should be verified. Especially after protocol upgrades, outdated educational content may not reflect current operations. If a service’s claims do not align with the permissions verifiable on-chain, technical data should take precedence. Private keys and recovery phrases should never be shared during any research or support process.
